On Wednesday, Phantom Blade Zero dropped a brand-new 11-minute gameplay demo and opened pre-orders across all platforms. The video quickly racked up around eight million views on Chinese video platform Bilibili in just one day, while the game has shot to No. 1 on Steamโs global best-sellers chart.
Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia-themed third-person action RPG developed and published by Beijing-based S-Game. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and features a dark, atmospheric art style and fast-paced combat, set in a fictional world that blends Chinese martial arts with steampunk elements.
Compared with the fragmented trailers and short gameplay clips released previously, this latest demo offers a much more substantial look at the actual game. The developers skipped CG footage and instead showed two complete levels, giving players a much better idea of what the game is actually like to play.

The demo mainly showcases two stages, Fog Forest Hunt and Lone City Showdown, which offer a closer look at both combat and exploration. Fans familiar with the Phantom Blade series will recognize mechanics such as rapid-step combos and Chain Blade armor-breaking attacks, while one of the more notable additions is the newly revealed Reality-Void switching system.
In simple terms, players can switch between the real world and the Void during combat, with each state offering different moves and combat interactions. The system adds another layer to the combat, meaning players aren’t just focused on chaining attacks, but also have to pay attention to positioning, timing, and which dimension they are fighting in.
Based on the gameplay footage, the game continues to focus heavily on the pace and rhythm of combat. Character movement, dodging, attacks, and enemy combos are all relatively fast, while the Chain Blade gives the combat a distinctive visual and mechanical identity.
Combined with ink-wash-inspired environments and dynamic lighting, the game retains the dark and stylized wuxia aesthetic that has become a signature of the series.

The demo also includes plenty of details that had not been shown before. These include destructible Jiangnan-style rain-soaked alleys, weather effects that change with the intensity of combat, and different types of elite enemies.
According to the developers, the gameplay demo was recorded on PS5 in Performance Mode, with a target of 60fps. The PC version will support higher frame rates as well as ultrawide displays. Pre-orders are now open, with three editions available: Standard, Deluxe, and a physical Collectorโs Edition.
After 11 minutes of gameplay, Phantom Blade Zero is finally giving players more than just trailers to speculate about. The footage provides a much clearer basis for judging its combat system, environments, and overall level of polish.

For a Chinese-developed game built around hardcore action gameplay, whether it can nail the feel of its combat, the quality of its animations, and the pacing of its levels will ultimately matter more than simply having impressive visuals. So far, Phantom Blade Zero has at least made its combat identity fairly clear.
The game is currently expected to launch in the fourth quarter of this year on PS5, PC, and other platforms. The bigger question now is whether the final release can consistently deliver what this demo promisesโand whether the full game has enough content and variety to sustain that experience from start to finish.
